To be held at Chinatown Food Street from 30 to 31 July 2016, The 50 Cents Fest will transport guests back to 1950/60s Singapore, as the entire food street transforms into a nostalgic “pasar” or street hawker scene. Set against a realistic backdrop, visitors can indulge in sumptuous local fare comprising more than 30 iconic traditional dishes served up by 20 stalls and a team of specialist mobile hawkers.
Enjoy 1950s favourites like Kok Kok Mee, traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls or the classic Ice Ball, a ball of shaved ice drizzled with syrup and evaporated milk for as little as 50 cents!
Yesterday’s food at yesterday’s prices
Go back in time this Food Festival to experience Singapore in the Fabulous Fifties at Chinatown Food Street, with a loving recreation that will see traditional street hawkers selling local street food classics like Char Kway Teow (flat rice noodles stir-fried with pork lard and cockles), Kok Kok Mee (fishball noodles served by hawkers who made a familiar “kok kok” sound with bamboo sticks), Satay (grilled meat skewer) and Iceballs. All served with a generous dollop of nostalgia and for as little as 50 cents!
To complete the experience, there’ll be street buskers, retro photo booths, old-school letter writers, street fortune tellers, and even the screening of black and white movies, just like it was in the good ol’ days.
Come by and savour timeless favourites in a nostalgic setting – after all, good food and fun never grow old. Better yet, make it a family affair – Grandpa and Grandma will appreciate the walk down memory lane and can share their own stories with the young ones.
