Dear Friends,

The past few weeks have been humbling and challenging. We have turned inward and looked outward—listening to our colleagues, reading your comments, learning from thought leaders in the Black community and coming together as an organization. We have used this time to reflect on the role we must play in creating a more equitable society.

Black lives must matter.
The reality is that systemic racism has been pervasive for centuries—woven into the fabric of our nation.
We condemn it. It has no place in our company. We have zero tolerance for it.
As I said in a previous note in support of our Black colleagues last week,
We see you. We hear you. We owe you more…While we’ve made strides as an organization, none of us can be satisfied with our progress…This transformational period will test the character of our organization and the very values we have committed to uphold.
Transformation and progress will rely on meaningful, sustainable action—from every colleague in every building with the Bloomingdale’s name on it. Today, we don’t have all the answers, but I wanted to share with you the steps we are beginning to take.
We will listen, learn and educate:
One of our core values is our commitment to a culture of learning—one where we embrace self-reflection, constructive candor and continued personal growth. While we’ve had existing programming on unconscious bias and inclusive leadership, we know it’s not enough. We will do more to create a community of allies—ensuring we move to a culture that is actively anti-racist.
We will evaluate representation and hold ourselves accountable for progress:
Every person deserves the opportunity to be their very best. We are responsible for evolving our culture to one where diversity flourishes at all levels and everyone is encouraged to thrive. We need to continue to increase the level of representation in the leadership of our company. We will work to expand our imagery across channels to better reflect the diverse communities we serve.
We will use our platform for change:
Bloomingdale’s is proud to be part of Macy’s, Inc., and together we have committed $1 million to social justice organizations. On bloomingdales.com and in our stores, you will soon have the opportunity to join us in donating to organizations that we are proudly supporting: the NAACP, the Black Retail Action Group and one other cause that we will announce next week. We look forward to sharing further details shortly.
We will support our colleagues to take action:
Change of this magnitude cannot be done by a company alone. We have an organization of curious, caring and determined colleagues who have a desire to learn, grow and act. We have expanded our employee match program to include a broader list of groups that support social justice causes. We will share resources to help our colleagues find their own path and encourage their participation in the democratic process.

Together—as a company, industry and community—we must do more to embrace the richness of our differences, educate to find and then speak the truth, provide comfort during difficult times, and guide ourselves and others to action. While it won’t come fast or easy, with leadership, courage, empathy and resilience, we will get there.
