Updates on our Facebook page will be a bit slow during the next few days as we're currently doing live updates of the ongoing ASEAN Capacity Building session for #DPOs on Twitter (www.twitter.com/dpasg).

However, here's an interesting study we came across and thought you'd like to share your thoughts on it!

"Abstract: When not done properly, policies or interventions that claim to be 'inclusive' can be patronizing or even oppressive. Through interviews and focus groups with employers, service providers and the disability community in Singapore, we helped to articulate what counts as ideal or sensible inclusion of people with disabilities at work. Against those that might seek to mainstream disability wherever it exists, our findings suggest that enclaved spaces for work serve an important function despite charges of being exclusionary. Some enclaves operate as 'work villages' that provide a protected, familiar space to accommodate unique needs while others serve as 'diversity incubators' that provide scalable lessons for more mainstream contexts. Within the Singapore context, policymakers largely operate within a 'business case' paradigm that focuses on incentivizing employers and an 'industrial model' of vocational assessment and job placement. While this has a role to play, we demonstrate the importance of attending to the neglected 'moral case' for hiring people with disabilities." (more…)

Over the weekend, one of our inclusion ambassadors, Ms Noraini attended the Global Volunteer Festival 2017 (#GVF2017) where she shared about how volunteering can be more inclusive. Noraini also managed to put her handprint to signify her support towards a more sustainable, and inclusive world.

The Global Volunteer Festival promoted the spirit of youth and volunteerism internationally, and locally, and was a platform for individuals to understand, contribute, and take actions to create a better world for us all.

On 27 June 2017, DPA was present at official launch of 'Give Back 2017 - Inclusivity and Me' campaign at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The campaign, part of the polytechnic's annual Give Back programme, aimed to better integrate its students with special educational needs (SEN) and to advocate for a more inclusive campus.

DPA set up disability specific inclusion booths that offered interactive and experiential sessions. Our Inclusion Ambassadors with disabilities were present to handle the booths and engage with the students.

DPA also conducted workshops for the staff of Ngee Ann Polytechnic to raise awareness and promote inclusion of people with disabilities.

Dr Lim Gaik Bee, co-chairman of the committee that spearheaded the campaign, noted the importance of an inclusive campus environment, saying: "Every person counts... We have to look beyond their disabilities to their abilities."

Did you know that Singapore submitted its initial report to the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 13 July 2016?

The report provides a great overview of the collaborative efforts of government agencies, voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) and other partners in making Singapore a caring and inclusive society. But not enough statistical information is available. As our late founder, Mr Ron Chandran-Dudley, once mentioned, "When you know the numbers, then you know how to plan." Without access to those statistics, it is impossible for ministries and VWOs to adequately budget for or plan disability-related programmes and policies, and even more difficult for civil society to track the implementation and efficiacy of those programmes and policies.

Do you remember Richard Kuppusamy? DPA conducted an interview with him back in 2014 about the ways in which WOHA Architects have retrofitted their shophouse with wheelchair-friendly features. Since then, Richard continues to advocate for and tries to incorporate the concept of universal design into his local projects.

It's great that people with disabilities such as Richard are involved in the construction of accessible buildings. They are the experts in their own lives and should therefore be included in every dialogue and consultation process related to the promotion and protection of their rights.

Local Posted 2 years ago

On 21 December 2016, DPA took part in the Merry Marathon. Merry Marathon is an annual volunteering event initiated by students since 2012 and powered by Positive Intentions, a social enterprise. The aim of Merry Marathon is to spread the Christmas joy around Singapore, especially to those who may feel neglected during this festive season.

DPA collaborated with its institutional member, Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (COH) and Merry Marathon team to organise this event. The event was held at the two Emmanuel Activity Centres of COH (Tampines and Toa Payoh). The DPA team attended the event at the Tampines centre.

Merry Marathon volunteers had a great time with members of DPA and COH doing Christmas-related activities. They spent time carolling, making candy cane with beads and passing the gifts. There was also a Polaroid booth decorated with Christmas themes and many of DPA’s members took advantage of this booth to take many festive photos. Later on, goodie bags were distributed to the participants.

This year, the beneficiaries of Merry Marathon included Disabled People’s Association (DPA), Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (COH), Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Friendship and Mind Enrichment (FAME) Club, Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) and Sunlove Abode. The volunteers mainly included students from Nanyang Technological University, but also included students from other educational institutions.

DPA conducted disability awareness talks for the volunteers and this helped them to interact more confidently with people with disabilities.

Merry Marathon is now in its fifth and it continues to reach out to people and positively touch their lives. The event was a platform for volunteers to connect and build rapport with people with disabilities. This empowered volunteers to uphold the spirit of inclusion. DPA thanks Merry Marathon team and appreciates them for making Merry Marathon, cheerful and lively. (more…)
