Industrial designer-turned-visual artist Anthony Chin relates his experience of transiting to an artist in our upcoming talk “From Design to Art: Creating Experiences for the Public”. He will share about his journey - the challenges and rewards - and his upcoming immersive installation that will be unveiled in March at Emerald Hill.

When asked for a book recommendation, Anthony gave us two! “‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind’ (Call No.: Lifestyle Design/ Culture & Society 909 HAR) cuts through the history of the human race by dividing our story into three broad ‘revolutions’. In a clear, succinct manner, the author clarifies complex concepts to illustrate the events that brought us to where we are today. While ‘Sapiens’ looks to the past, ‘Homo Deus’ (Call No.: Lifestyle Design/ Culture & Society 909.83 HAR) looks into the future and questions: will humans still be relevant?”

This programme is happening on 27 January, 4.30pm to 5.30pm, and is organised in collaboration with OH! Open House.

Tiny worlds tell epic tales. Co-organiser of the Plastic Singapore group, Sunny Ang shares how he discovered the world of toy photography:

“I was feeling bored one day so I picked up a Spiderman action figure, placed him on the ledge, and shot a picture of him gazing down at the streets below, as if preparing to leap off and save the world. Later, I discovered the huge toy photography community on Instagram and haven’t stopped shooting and posting toy photos since.”

When asked for a good read, he recommends “Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy” by Vesa Lehtimaki. “Featuring Lego mini figures from the Star Wars universe, most of the images are mysteriously lit, humorous, and set in a galaxy far, far away. Fans of the franchise will also appreciate the subtle movie references. This book inspires me and I see it as the gold standard of toy photography.”

[email protected] is hosting Sunny as a speaker in an introductory talk on toy photography on 1 July, 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Sunny will also be our Resident on 8, 22 & 29 July, 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Register at http://bit.ly/ResidentToyPhotography (more…)

Trivia Goh, artist and illustrator, deals primarily with large-scale charcoal drawings and paintings which focus on the little things as she believes that these trivialities make the biggest difference. She has exhibited at the ArtScience Museum, and the Arthouse Nahkuri in Kärsämäki, Finland. Her book, Nightmares are Made of This, was exhibited in the library last November. She will be back in the library to conduct the Imagine That! Illustration Workshop this Saturday.

Her book recommendation is "The Magic Brush and Other Stories" by Enid Blyton (ISBN: 9780861631452).

"The Blyton series in general opens up this whole new alternate world for the easily distracted. The short stories make for great imagination exercise. One minute it'd be about fairies and pixies, and the next it'd be about cutting up the blue sky to make a sailor's pants. It is a quick leap from one chapter to the next and this keeps the reader from losing interest. The Magic Brush was the first book that I read from cover to cover and I would go back to the Blyton books once in a while to refresh that fascination for fantasy. I would recommend this book very much to anyone and everyone in need of some book magic." (more…)
