“My wife and I ran the New York Marathon during our honeymoon and last year, we completed a half iron man race in New Zealand. Our motto is to live a happy and healthy life by creating awesome experiences and memories.”
Barend’s passion for life extends into his role as the Head of the Energy Commodities where his team is responsible for providing funding to his clients who trade energy commodities, namely oil and gas, in key Asian markets including China, Malaysia, and Myanmar. When asked about the most challenging aspect of his job, Barend says it’s analysing how global events, such as elections and regulatory changes, would affect the market and ultimately, his clients.
Reflecting on his career so far, Barend says that he’s a firm believer in visualising your long-term goals and receiving support from people who believe in you along the way. “I’m thankful for the opportunity and support that’s brought me to where I am in my career today. It’s been a rewarding experience where I get to work with a diverse group of interesting people from around the world.”
Outside of the office, Barend is passionate about coaching young people to help them discover their passion and strengths. He finds it especially rewarding when his past interns reconnect with him either about their new job or even to attend their weddings. “I’ve just been invited by a past intern to be a judge at an innovation competition at a local university and I’m excited to see what ideas and ambitions the students will show.”

Not many people realise that Singapore has several eco-friendly shopping malls that feature green roofs which harness solar energy; permeable building shells to encourage airflow; and energy saving escalators that slow down when not in use.
On the ground, there are many individuals and interest groups who are very passionate about environmental sustainability, have good ideas of how sustainability can be achieved in Singapore, but lack the funds for implementation.
The #OCBCCares Fund for the Environment does just that – providing financial support for projects that have direct impact on our environment. Before you apply for the Fund, sign up for a training workshop on 24 August 2017 – OCBC specialist volunteers will offer tips on project management; financial planning; budgeting know-how and presentation skills to help bring your proposals to fruition. Find out more about the Fund and sign up for the workshop here: bit.ly/OCBCBetterEnvironment (more…)

The most interesting aspect of Clara’s job as a Relationship Manager is bringing order to chaos, especially when dealing with challenging clients. It is this skill that has also helped her face the ups and downs of bringing up 2 young children.
“Weekend mornings usually mean baggy shirts, messy hair, and digging deep for some zest to perform in my other role as CEO (Chief Entertainment Officer).” Most weekends involve whimsical activities with her two littles ones, like short trips to nearby places like Malaysia, swimming, and DIY activities like making costumes for the kids’ parties. But the favourite by far is playing with bubble wands that create bubbles large enough for her kids to fit inside!
For all the effort she puts in, Clara hopes her kids can look back and remember how much fun their childhood was. She reminds us of Joe Biden’s quote, “Every important thing your child will say to you … will be at a time when you don’t expect it,” and tells us that this is why she treasures all the time she can get with her little kids. “You can’t ‘schedule’ good times with your kids, or press pause so you can pencil in fond memories when you’re free.” Words to live by!
