The 7th SINDA Young Leaders Programme (SYLP) organised by SINDA Youth Club (SYC) saw 36 youth participants graduate on Saturday, 1 July. SYLP is part of broader efforts by SINDA to develop youth to their fullest potential, support them in realising their aspirations and encouraging them to be active contributors in society.
Over the last five months, our young leaders underwent extensive training on the themes of community leadership and social change, that invited them to better understand their own leadership potential, challenged their thought processes, offered greater insight into social and community issues and guided them in devising practical solutions that could best address these issues.
The graduation ceremony provided participants a chance to present their projects as well as take part in a dialogue session with Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Second Minister for Defence, who was the Guest of Honour for the event. (more…)

“Being a SINDA Liaison Officer (SLO) has allowed me to reach out to students who struggle in their studies but are unable to afford private tuition, with SINDA’s Project Teach programme held in my school. It is indeed rewarding when I see the grades of my students improve after being part of Project Teach. It may be a small contribution on my part but the change and impact it can make to a student’s life is extremely big!” - Megalai d/o Thangavelu, SLO, Senior Teacher, Ngee Ann Primary School

Nurturing the Next Generation of Innovators and Inventors
Over 500 kids were beaming with excitement at a graduation ceremony by Google for students who attended its Code in the Community programme – an initiative to sponsor coding classes for 3,000 students in Singapore over three years. The goal is to help these children get a head start in computational thinking and coding skills over 20 sessions.
SINDA, together with the other self-help groups, is proud to be onboard with Google in this initiative. We want to see our students become the country’s next generation of innovators and inventors, and this programme will get them to do just that!
Congratulations to all our young minds at the graduation! Continue the hunger to learn and grow! (more…)
“Education opens us up to a world of opportunities and frames how we view and participate in society. Providing scholarships is one way of championing meritocracy, of empowering students to follow their dreams and build a better life. I believe it is important that we help our youth develop their interests to become active contributors of society. After all, education is but the great equaliser, as Horace Mann so eloquently put it.” - Balwant Rao Jain, CEO of Optimum Solutions and donor of scholarship funds to SINDA
“When I reached out to SINDA for assistance, SINDA generously offered me the Optimum Solutions Scholarship. With the scholarship in hand, I was better able to focus on my studies and this made me more confident in completing my university studies and fulfilling my aspirations.” - Revathi d/o Rajendran, SINDA scholarship recipient, Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Graduate, Singapore Institute of Technology

Leadership Starts Young!
“As leaders, we should never take our abilities for granted; those who rest on their laurels without making any effort to further develop their skills will eventually be left behind. This is one of my key reasons for having taken part in many youth leadership programs. Among these, the most memorable programme for me was the SINDA Young Leader’s Programme (SYLP).
Utilising various methodologies such as design thinking, SYLP taught me various skills that have helped me further my learning capabilities, more than what other common leadership programmes offered. The international study trip was a key highlight of the programme, where we visited parts of Sri Lanka, interacted with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the common people. The trip gave us fresh perspectives on how the people of Sri Lanka viewed various social issues and I found that so insightful. SYLP was indeed an enlightening experience for me.” - Devanantthan Ragupathi, SYLP 2016 Participant

SINDA’s Indian Business-leaders’ Roundtable (IBR) commemorated its 5th year in conjunction with the Singapore Dialogue Series with Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran.
In these five years, IBR, comprising senior Indian business-leaders, has complemented SINDA’s efforts and kept the needs of the Indian community close to heart - especially those of the underprivileged. Its efforts include raising $650,000 towards our educational programmes, CSR projects such as sponsoring spectacles for our beneficiaries and setting up an IT lab at SINDA. Furthermore, IBR has also supported SINDA’s annual Back-To-School-Festival, easing low-income families’ financial and academic needs.
IBR has also championed the nationwide SkillsFuture initiative, by conducting career guidance talks for secondary-level students at various STEP centres islandwide. Experienced captains of industry across various sectors took the time to speak to these youngsters, enlighten them about the needs of various industries and how they can prepare themselves well for it.
Commending IBR for its good work, Minister Iswaran shared with its members on what more needs to be done for the community and encouraged them to continue giving back.
We at SINDA truly appreciate IBR’s partnership with us in our efforts to uplift the Indian community. Congratulations on reaching five years and we look forward to many more years of meaningful collaboration! (more…)
