How El Primero passed the ‘test of time’ while 35,000 feet up in the air.
El Primero – Zenith’s most definitive movement beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour, making it the world’s most accurate chronograph. In 1970, El Primero boarded the Air France flight from Paris to New York, to test its effectiveness. However, not comfortably placed on a traveller’s wrist, instead, it was fixed to the landing gear of the airplane.
El Primero’s legendary journey started with freezing temperatures at 4°C on the tarmac in Paris to quickly dropping down to -62° at an altitude of 10,000 meters in just 20 minutes. While the toughest of the watches would have given up after the terrible jolting at landing, Zenith El Primero remained accurate to the nearest second apart from the inevitable time-zone difference.

MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis - the first multi-axis tourbillon from Hublot.
Announced at this year's Baselworld, the watch beats to the rhythm of calibre HUB9009.H1.RA, and is designed from the movement up. Its calibre is automatic with a 5-day power reserve. Seemingly complicated at the very first look, it draws your attention instantly by offering maximum visibility. With a sapphire crystal case that tapers at 6 o’clock to display the double rotation of the bi-axial tourbillon, this watch is really unlike any other.
Comes in three versions, all limited editions.
The Vingt-8 ISO counters the brain’s reflex of registering time when someone simply glances at it. How?
World renowned psychologist, Daniel Kahneman, said there are two ways in which the brain registers time. One, when someone casually looks at the watch, and the brain automatically sends the signal. Second, when one cannot tell the time by simply looking at his watch. It takes a few seconds for you to know the time, but, you know the time better and have a more intimate and reflective relation with your watch. Well you’re ideally spending ‘time’ with your watch.
The Voutilainen Twenty-eight encapsulates this philosophy – as a new hour nears, the minute hand seems to be chasing the hour hand, eventually meeting at the same spot at the top of each hour. Intriguing right?
Stunning and super ceramic, the Laureato Skeleton takes an audacious walk on the dark side. Allowing light to flood through its incredible open-worked movement, it is a beast in itself!
An ode to fine mechanics, it offers a clear peek into the heart of its magnificent automatic calibre, making us nod in affirmation that Girard-Perregaux’s Laureato Skeleton is the mark of a skeleton labyrinth. Limited to just 100 pieces, it’s a collector’s delight.
